Lisa Stansfield was born in Manchester, England, on April 11th 1966. Her family moved to Heywood, then to Rochdale when she was 11. Lisa's father, Keith, was an electrical engineer and often worked away from home so she spent most part of her time with her mother Marion and her sisters Karen and Suzanne. Lisa's music influences came mainly from her childhood: her mum used to play a lot of Motown music like Diana Ross and The Supremes, Marvin Gaye,  Barry White, etc. and her parents also gave big parties where Barry White's music was always played.

"I'm very very fortunate that I was 4 years old and I actually knew what I wanted to do from then. That was it, I wanted to sing."

She won a talent contest sponsored by the Manchester Evening News at age 14 and became presenter of ITV children pop show "Razzamatazz". In spite of this she wasn't satisfied, she wanted to become a singer, not a presenter! One night she met her former classmates Ian Devaney and Andy Morris at the local pub who offerered her to become the lead vocal of their group and this is how they formed the group Blue Zone in 1984. They recorded various songs and an album but the success arrived just in 1989 with "People Hold On", collaboration with Coldcut, where Lisa's name was used for the 1st time. It worked fine so Ian and Andy, who didn't like to stay in the limelight, proposed Lisa to become a solo act.

Curiosity: at 19 Lisa got married with an Italian designer she met in Tunisia. She lived in Zagarolo (Rome) for 4 months. She divorced later on 'cos she fell in love with Ian (her husband since '98. They got married in NY. Apart from being Lisa's man Ian is also her co-writer, music arranger and producer).
